Recovering Nicely

Bad day Thursday, couldn't sleep and feeling bad, dizzy, and gout on my right foot swollen. Felt a little better on Friday and set out for the VA at Tripler. Left at about 12:30 and as I passed by I said hello to Jeffrey and Carla and they were setting up. Crossed the street, nicely and looked towards the sea and nothing there except the sea.

"There may not be much to see in a small town, but what you hear makes up for it."

Down to the bus stop and then walked over the mound to take a better look. Beautiful day but not a soul in sight on the Lualualei side and on the far side of Nanakuli,  a few people. No fishermen either. Calm sea and the waves were the usual high stuff.

The bus was late but I had plenty of time anyway. And I waited about 10 minutes for the 31 Tripler bus. At the VA the schedule for the next bus was 3:15 so I still had plenty of time. Went upstairs to sign up for my blood test. They were fast and I went around checkint the magazine in the differents sections. Nothing good and I don't find anymore computer magazines. There use to be many a year ago.

At the interview my blood level was too low and I have another review in two weeks. Tough. Got the 3:15 late and at the Kalihi Transit Center I figured I was ten minutes too late for the C bus going to the Waianae Coast. Waited five minutes for the 2 or B and there goes the C Bus, it was late too. So I decide to go into town and get me some goodies. Bought them and got to the bus stop with plenty of time to get the 93, Express gets on the freeway and does not get off until past Kapolei and first stop is Honokai Hale.

It was late too and I didn't get home until five.  Tired and hungry. So how was your day.

Nanakuli High School Arts and Crafts

Nice afternoon and Ruth knocks on my door and tells me the kids are here. Wow, gotta get the camera, pens,  paper etc. Went downstairs the lady in charge making good time. Not enough interested people, we are still just getting started in taking advantage of all the goodies offered to us.

Took this one with the best light coming from my back.

With these two I am facing the light. So I am learning in my old age.

These young kids and spend some time to help the Seniors. Hopefully we can get more people next to appreciate Nanakuli High School students.

Nanakuli Ridge, my residence.

I have made some contact with the mainland and informed them of this blog. It is the easiest way to keep my friends and relatives informed of my doings and my life for the short time remaining.

"It will do you no good to get on the right track if you are going in the wrong direction."

I have receive photos from the mainland and I scanned them and posted them to this blog but have not received any recognition from anyone that they saw them. So the blog is not in contact with anyone of them yet.

I am making some good contact with my neighbors and that counts for a lot. I get a few photos from the various gathering, though some may not be that interested. I have to find the best way to get the communication.

"Stranger In Paradise by Tony Bennett
Down the street, I have Shelly's Hair Studio but they are too busy. Then next door is Kokua Mau, and they are too busy but I help wherever I can. Evelyn has a whole group of handicapped people that they help and they even take in a little outside work of small constructions with paper and ornaments and easily learned.

Kokua is in their name. I have to drop in there now and then, usually on my way to the Super Market. I am helping them get a good computer set up.

"The Tennessee Waltz" by Patti Page

Then I have the Nanakuli Super parking lot. Individual entrepreneurs use the lot with permission of Nanakuli Super. The anchor is Ono Steak and Lobster, starring Jeffrey and Carla. Five days per week, Mondays thru Fridays. Now and then I can get a photo of a group at the table, sometime part of the family which is just fine for everyone.

"My Way" by Frank Sinatra

Then my next best is Saturday and Sunday, Angelo's Malasadas, starring Roza and Cindy. And I get a photo now and then. They even received a comment in the blog from someone in Chicago, Illinois, someone that knew Cindy. Just terrific.

Gave them a couple copied CDs  of music from Mexico City. Luis Miguel. Just to introduce the music to Nanakuli Ridge.

Pub's Side Note: I am gradually getting more and they will be in here often. The main thing is that we get to know each other a little better. We are Nanakuli Ridge and we take pride in our growing community.

Napa Auto Parts

Nice Saturday morning, and I got most of small items out of the way. Nearing noon, I needed some sandpaper and I had to try Sack N Save first. There were a few nice people at the door when I left the apartments and took a nice leisurely stroll to the Nanakuli Super parking lot.

"Few people ever carve their way to sucess with cutting remarks."

I gave a couple of CD copies to the ladies at Angelo's Malasadas, and went on my way. No sandpaper at SnS, so I was advised that maybe NAPA. Sure enough they got it.

In Nanakuli, dis da place.

I had never been there, I don't have a car, but I was pleasantly surprised, Nice People and I got a photo. Unfortunately, I am still pressing the button too fast, not clear enough.

Steven and Rene, gave me a couple Napa advertising balls too. Mahalo.

"Welcome to our humble establishment." ~Rene

We are gradually accumulating more Nanakuli Ridge people and we are going to deal with each other in the friendliest ways. Lookin' Good.

"So forget about blogs and bloggers and blogging and focus on this — the cost and difficulty of publishing absolutely anything, by anyone, into a global medium, just got a whole lot lower. And the effects of that increased pool of potential producers is going to be vast."

Don't I wish, I coulda walked home in five minutes. Nanakuli seems to be waking up. Now Sack N Save open till eleven. MacDonalds too. More places will be open til midnight when the new Walgreens come to Nanakuli. Wow!

One of the guys in the Nanaikeola Senior Apartments has decided to donate his body to Jennifer Lopez, and he says, "if she can't wait, she can have it now."

Agostino's Pizza

Nice Wednesday and I had to go to Sack N Save for some goodies. On the way I stopped at Kokua Mau and exchanged pleasantries, then passed by Ono Steak and Shrimp and said hello. Then came across our new Wednesday provider of good food for our community. The parking lot at the Nanakuli Super is becoming well known with the help of this blog.

Things are moving very nicely in the background too.
And Agostino says "Try the real thing."

It apparently has already occurred to others to buy and share with their fellow neighbors this good bounty at the Parking Lot. We could at one of our Nanaikeola get togethers, get someone to buy some of this authentic Sicilian pizza, Agostino cuts it into eight peices so if it costs 8 dollars, everyone pays a buck for their slice. Simple and easy as pie.

"Stranger In Paradise" by Tony Bennett

I suppose, they could do this at Kaiser Permanente, and Kokua Mau. We are all rolling in the same direction and thinking that our attention should first be for our community, friends and fellow residents and neighbors. And Nanakuli Ridge surges on.

Pub's Side Note: The big money people have preferred to be omitted from our endeavors and that should be acceptable to us. We must help those that are with us.

Karaoke at Nanaikeola Senior Apartments

Tuesday, April 10th, from 10 am to 2 pm in the third floor community room. (I still think it would be more inviting if it was open door.) Nice bunch of ladies there. OK, you guys, where are you?

Ruth, Dee Jeanna, Kathy and Tina

From Kathy: Karaoke, a party get together for singing, dancing and fun. Lots of Fun. Don't need to be an Ella Fitzgerald or Frank Sinatra to sing, or a Fred Astaire to dance. To have fun is what this is all about.

As the poet Edgar A Guest said:
Let me be a little kinder, Let me be a little blinder.
To the faults of those around me, Let me praise a little more.

Relatives on the Mainland.

Got a nice Easter Card from my neice Yvonne and a couple photos. She doesn't have email, which is easier and I find it difficult to write nowadays. (wasn't much good at it in my younger days either.) I can type and that is easy. I will see about making a blog for them. They will be here in May for five days and I must prepare something.

April update

Things have been slowing down, mostly my fault. I have been working on my other blogs. Then too some people have the "selling syndrome." If you are offering something you must be selling something which of course is true in many of the "selling gimmicks."

"The greatest and noblest pleasure which people can have in this world is to
discover new truths. And the next is to shake off the old prejudices."

We can dream, can't we?
I tried Sack N Save and they are wary. So I quit asking anything that smacks of big business. The action at the Nanakuli Super Parking lot is moving along but slowly. I have to take it easy. I tried the Chinese Restaurant which I know is not doing so good. But the lady there immediately got the "selling syndrome" look. They don't have internet and they are not interested. When I mention free, that really turned her off. And we must understand that too.

The new selling gimmicks on TV, on the Internet and in personal contacts, whatever, it is free just to get your attention and then they come in with the sales pitch. So we all must be careful with "free." So far in Nanakuli Ridge no one has had to pay for anything. And if you don't mention money, I won't either.

"Morning Dew" by Melveen Leed

Meanwhile the only Mini Web site we have so far is for the Ono Steak And Shrimp, just click the name on the side bar. There will be others, interested? It's free. Ha! There is that word again!

Was it a Nanakuli student who answered the teachers question?

Q: What is despair?
A: "It’s da tire you keep in da trunk ah da car!"

Just got some photos from my neice and she and her daughter will be coming to visit in May. They will have a rollicking good time in Waikiki and downtown Honolulu but they will also come to Nanakuli to visit Uncle Pepe.

Rolling Along

I was working on my computer when I heard the activity going on ncxt door. The church has its meetings there now and then. I had to get some Malasadas and in passing I got a photo of the crowd outside. Then I went to get my Malasadas. Got a picture, with a customer too and nice short quote.

So we are all learning, including me.

"Come check us out every Saturday and Sunday in front of Nanakuli Food Giant's
and the taste of your life." ~ Roza

Then again in passing back home, I saw the crowd leaving the church gathering and I thought to inquire. Very nice people.

This time I got a nice write up from Vina.

Tree planting event on the center grounds. Three kukui nut trees went into the center grounds today to celebrate the "new beginnings." We gathered at our Community Center (which is in process of being finished) to plant three kukui nut trees.

The kukui tree is known for its oil in the old days for the Hawaiian People for lamps. The tree is also known as "the tree of light."
